Why Oregon Needs Palomar Gas Transmission

The Willamette Valley - home to Oregon’s major population centers - is served by a single interstate natural gas pipeline. Palomar Gas Transmission would increase the amount of natural gas available to Oregon and enhance the reliability of existing energy infrastructure in the Willamette Valley and southwest Washington State.

Palomar will help the region meet overall increased demand for this environmentally responsible fuel while enhancing the security of natural gas supply during periods of peak consumption. It will also help support future economic development.
Highlights:

  • 10-mile, 36-inch-diameter pipeline extending from the existing Gas Transmission Northwest pipeline near Madras to a connection with NW Natural system near Molalla southeast of Portland
  • Palomar would transport natural gas, the ideal bridge fuel to help provide backup for renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power
  • Project would bring 1,000 construction jobs, many of which will be local hires; more than $15 million in rent for non-local employees during construction; and approximately $150 million in local expenditures on food, fuel, and materials
  • Approximately $4.5 million a year in aggregate property taxes to Jefferson, Wasco and Clackamas counties

Palomar is committed to safe operation of its pipeline, which will be monitored 24 hours a day by trained technicians. It will have a robust integrity management program, and the pipeline will be routinely inspected, inside and out.
